Ecuador's special appeal to trekkers can be described in three concepts: accessible, wild and biologically divers. The country's unique combination of exceptional geographic and biological diversity and good transportation infrastructure places an outstanding variety of splendid natural experiences within easy reach of the adventurous visitor. Trekking options in Ecuador are as diverse as the country's natural areas: Deserts, endemic high plateaus known as páramos, cloud forests, Amazon Jungle, snow capped active volcanoes and the unique Galapagos Islands ecosystems, each with its specific wildlife and climate conditions. While trekking, one can easily experience dramatic climate and biological change in just a few hours!
This outstanding ecological diversity makes Ecuador the world’s biologically most divers country. Being 33 times smaller than USA, Ecuador is home of twice the bird species. Having half of its territory covered by woods and bushes, 10,7% of world’s vertebrate animals are found in Ecuador.
With more than forty-five protected natural areas, Ecuador offers innumerable opportunities for excellent trekking and hike trips. Some of the longer Ecuador Expeditions treks span several natural regions, from the highlands down toward the Amazon jungle or coastal plain. This is the country for people that want to walk really off the beaten track. Unlike well-known trekking venues such as Nepal, the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, and Patagonia’s Chilean or Argentinean treks, trails in Ecuador are never crowded and offer virtually unlimited scope for exploration.
The areas where Ecuador Expeditions bring the trekkers have remained wild and practically untouched by human action. Our work has consisted on understanding each rout, finding the best local and international guides, finding the most suitable (and sometimes very difficult to find) paths and camping spots. And all this with the aim of making the visitor feel unique sensations while interacting with pure nature and making sure to preserve it.
Although Ecuador has wet and dry seasons, they are not the same in all parts of the country and may even vary from one valley to the next. Hence, conditions are suitable for trekking somewhere in Ecuador throughout the year.
Ecuador Expeditions offers a choice of treks from moderate, strenuous to tough treks, with overnight stays in tents or mountain huts. On the plateaus in the Andes we normally follow good paths, which can also change into cross country and even swamps. Your luggage is carried by packhorses and you only have to carry your light daypack. You should be in relatively good shape (daily 4-7 hours of walking) and be able to adjust also mentally on physical demands.
Trekking lovers visiting Ecuador will also have the chance to visit the country's more traditional destinations as the unique Galapagos Islands, the Ecuadorian Amazon Jungle or the Pacific Coast beaches, through our Relaxed Destinations or even getting introduced to a different activity like kayaking, volcano climbing or diving.
Please, check our Trekking Expeditions in our Catalogue and pick up those that suit your preferences the best.
