Location: Amazon Jungle
|
| Overview |
The Amazon, measuring 6.5 million square kilometers (approximately 2.5 million square miles) is the largest of tropical ecosystems, and contains a vast network of rivers and lakes, which constitutes 20% of the earth’s freshwater. In the whole of the Amazon Basin and the world, the highest levels of biodiversity have been recorded in the Ecuadorian Jungle. The heart of this natural wonder can be reached by land after a spectacular journey through breathtaking scenery or alternatively after a 30-minute flight from Quito, the capital city of this peaceful oasis, Ecuador. Approximately a third of the 1,671 species of birds recorded for Ecuador can be found here in our rainforest. It is a bird paradise.
Lush, green jungle lies on this zone, in this area of pristine beauty, botanists have discovered around 300 species of trees in one hectare alone. It is a heaven to be explored with its impressive vegetation and humid, earthy odor, along with the song of hidden frogs, extravagant birds, the wind-like cries of howler monkeys and the constant buzzing and chirping of a fascinating variety of insects. Just as a sample, more than 198 species of mammals inhabit the Ecuadorian rainforest.
In addition, the abundant rivers and lakes are home of 2 species of freshwater dolphins, as well as of 4 species of piranhas, and the gigantic paiche (Arapaima gigas), measuring up to 3 m / 21 ft. in length.
A national park, (Parque Nacional Yasuní), and the two reserves: Cuyabeno and Limoncocha, with the aim of preserving the rainforest, protect approximately 1.5 million hc. /3917534.5 acres of this rich ecosystem.
The Ecuadorian Amazon region is also home of eight indigenous communities: The Cofanes, the Shuaras, the Huaoranis, the Secoyas, the Sionas, the Achuar, the Quichuas and the Zaparos. Visitors to the Amazon have the opportunity to discover some of the ancient traditions of these native people, as well as receiving the benefit from their vast knowledge and understanding of their environment.
In our effort to establish Ecotourism, the participation of the indigenous communities in our work is fundamental, in order to keep this mutual collaboration and respect between visitors to the rainforest and their native hosts.
The Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is located north-east from Quito; it's indeed one of the most biodiverse zones in the Ecuadorian Amazon Jungle. This reserve has 14 lakes, the ones that give the tourist the unique opportunity of admiring the beauty of the flora and fauna in this flooded rain-forest, known as Igapó. This reserve is part of the Ecuadorian National Protected Areas System, this means that only qualified tour Operators work in this place. This is reason enough not to find a lot of tourists visiting this area, allowing our guests to enjoy the nature and its great sounds.

* All the facilities count with electricity (110-115 V), provided by Siemens Solar Panels
Other facilities:
- Dining room (capacity 32 passengers)
- Bar offering: Juices, wine, beer, cocktails, hard and soft drinks
Tapir Lodge is based in the northeastern Province of Sucumbíos, in the upper Ecuadorian Amazon region, within the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, and was built in partnership with family members of the Siona Community. In order to meet appropriate ecological standards, Tapir Lodge shares with them the Eco-tourism activities and profits, offering as well the best facilities in the heart of the jungle.
The rooms are really fresh, (all the windows are covered with nets) so there is no need for a/c or ventilators. All rooms have private bathroom, hot water shower, electricity (110 V.AB type outlets and plugs).
In every bathroom there is a blue water-container with purified water, (brought from Lago Agrio) perfectly safe for drinking and brushing your teeth.
Our philosophy of disturbing the rain forest the least possible, lead to the implementation of our bio- digester. This simple device (a big plastic “sausage”) located in the back of the tower) enables us to transform feces and black waters, into methane gas and “Biol” ( a processed organic material), which is pumped back in to the forest and used as fertilizer.
The electricity provided by solar panels is used to recharge batteries, and with an Inverter we produce 110-115 V AC, which is used for charging any type of electronic equipment so as for the illumination of the Lodge.
No hair driers or electric shavers are allowed, beside that, you are in the rain forest, a wild look (for a while) will really match with the surroundings!.
All the facilities and corridors are illuminated, but we kindly ask you to always to take good care of this resource, and whenever you feel you do not need illumination, please turn the lights off. Flashlights are essential to illuminate certain blind spots, and of course they are ideal for night walks and caiman watching.
Please keep in mind that you are going to a remote place and all the supplies as well as the luggage have to be transported by canoe. Therefore bring just enough clothes for the number of days you are staying.
Our social areas offer hammocks for resting and a variety of books for reading. The bar provides our clients with a variety of drinks. These are not included in the price, except soft drinks ( purified water, coffee and tea. The blue water - container in the social area, offers our clients unlimited purified water.
CLIMATE
It is a tropical rainforest, with a precipitation of ≈ 3000 mm (9.85 ft.) a year, and humidity percentages ranging from 60 to 85. From December to March we have a marked dry season; the rainy season goes from April to July, (this certainly means, the chances of raining are higher than in other months. Warm and sunny days are perfectly common); and from August to November, it’s moderate.
The main annual temperature ranges over 25 Cº (77 Fº).
ETHNOLOGY
Cuyabeno is the homeland of 3 ethnic groups, whose communities are settled in the boundaries of two important rivers found in the reserve such as: Aguarico and Cuyabeno. Cofanes, Sionas & Secoyas, are legendary habitants in this area.
The Siona community inhabits the upper part of the Cuyabeno Reserve, at Puerto Bolívar and the river Tarapuya.
ACTIVITIES
Even though we are following an itinerary, this does not mean that we are in a hurry or we need to do exactly as described; there will always be time to stop or to get back, if we find something interesting to look at.
Please notice that certain activities (bird watching, caiman watching, canoeing or fishing) can be rescheduled form one day to other depending on weather conditions and the decision of the guide. And, in the case there is a sudden change of plans, we will find a similar option or other activity to fulfill the clients’ interest.
During the camping tour we provide private tents (2 person’s max. per tent) and aluminum berths.
MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION
Land transportation: Depending on the number of people, the private transport will change from a Pick up (max 3 persons + guide) to a bus (up to 4 people). These vehicles accomplish the local standards of security and quality.
River Transportation: We use dugout canoes, which are made of a single tree. These canoes have a length of 15 m; (≈49ft.) powered by a 40 HP outboard motor. They are perfectly stable and safe, large enough to fit 10 passengers. The entire luggage will be covered with plastic during the boat drive.
Air transportation: On the departure day, we will fly with the airline TAME to Lago Agrio. The planes used are new airplanes with capacity of 110 passengers.
Departure time from Quito is usually at 09:00 in the morning.
The departure time of the last day will be done depending on the scheduled itineraries of TAME or VIP airlines flights. We will use TAME only Saturdays, this means an early wake up (3:00 in the morning. It is still going to be dark, but our canoe drivers have flashlights to illuminate their way). The rest of the days except Saturdays we will use VIP (Twin Turboprop Dornier 30 passengers capacity) which allows us a 7:30 wake up time.

Detailed Itinerary
4 Days / 3 Nights - 5 Days / 4 Nights (the unique 7 D/6 N is down at the end) |
| • Day 1: |
Our services start at Lago Agrio´s Airport. Our operation goes according to the first flight of TAME Quito – Lago Agrio. The flight duration is about 30 minutes (Boeing / Embraer Aircraft average capacity 100 passengers) to the city of Lago Agrio. Once in Lago you’ll be picked up by our own private transportation by one of our transfers. The airport is located outside the city; therefore we will not spend much time in Lago Agrio. Our private transportation (pick-up trucks, four wheel drive vehicles or buses) will drive us (2 ½ - 3 hours) to “El Puente” (The Bridge), which is the entrance to the Cuyabeno Reserve. Throughout this drive you will have the opportunity to see beautiful landscapes created by the combination of rainforest, rivers and small towns; 60% of this road is paved and the following 40% is open road, this means that depending on the weather conditions, we could expect a dusty or muddy road. On “El Puente” we will enjoy our box lunches and meet our tour guide, and then we will continue our trip via motorized canoe (12mts. / 24 ft. long); the luggage will be covered with plastic for protection, to prevent it from getting wet in the event of rain. We will also provide you with rain ponchos and life vests. In this narrow river you will be able to admire some of the wide variety of flora and fauna the Cuyabeno Reserve has to offer. After close to 2 ½ hours of navigating, we will arrive around dusk to the beautiful Tapir Lodge (05:00-06:00 PM). Dinner will be served at approximately 07:30 PM; after dinner the guide will inform our guest of the next day’s activities, and the required gear. Overnight spent in our cozy and relaxing Tapir Lodge.
|
| • Day 2: |
After a good night’s slumber, our day begins with our delicious breakfast, which is served at approximately 07:30 AM. Once breakfast is concluded, we will prepare to depart on our first journey of the day, but first we will provide our guests with rubber boots. At 08:30 AM we will meet at our pier and take our canoe; depending on the size of the group, we may take the motorized canoe or the paddle canoe (small wooden canoe 5mts. / 15ft. in length) which the indigenous inhabitants use as their main source of transportations and call them Quillas. These small yet stable vessels can accommodate up to four passengers and guide. We will navigate upstream to “Laguna Grande” (Big Lake) enjoying a slow ride in order to observe the surrounding Flora and Fauna. Our travel time should be about 30 minutes (paddle canoe 1 hour). Once we get there, we will appreciate this one of a kind Igapo or inundated forest. The Flora that can be found here is quite unique, with macrolobium trees abundant in numbers and ancient of age; which have adapted to the surrounding environment allowing them to grow straight out of the water. These majestic and antique trees create the perfect habitat for other plant life, such as Bromeliads, Orchids, Ferns and Cacti. Once we complete our Igapo excursion, we will travel to "Terra Firme" and begin a trek on a path called Palma Roja “Red Palm”; this path was once part of a scientific research station belonging to the Catholic University. This will be our first encounter with primary rainforest, which is the habitat for many terrestrial mammals; such as Tapirs, Capibaras, Jaguars, Agoutis and many more species native to the rainforest. These creatures are usually shy or active during nocturnal hours. Before our trek begins, there will be brief explanation regarding basic ecology of the rainforest. The duration of this trek is close to 3 ½ hours. On the way you will come across a swampy area but not to worry, our expert guide will lead you through the right way. There will be the opportunity to admire a variety of ancient trees, long Lianas and Giant Palms. We also hope to have the opportunity to see and hear many species of birds such as Woodpeckers, Tanagers, Macaws, and Toucans; and with luck we will come across two or three species of Monkeys. This trek follows a path that loops around in the rainforest; bringing us back to our point of origin. Our return time should be around 01:30 PM, to take the canoe back to Tapir. Lunch will be served at the lodge at about 02:20 PM, followed by a resting period of approximately 2 hours. During this time guests will have the option to try Piranha fishing or just relax in our hammocks to read or take a “Siesta” (Spanish for nap). At 05:00 PM we will again meet at our pier, and take the canoe to a new area of “Laguna Grande”. Once we get to the lake we will navigate through the surrounding area searching for birds and other animals. The option of swimming is available and it is a perfectly safe and relaxing activity. Depending on the weather, we may be able to admire a breathtaking sunset, as we pass the time enjoying the surrounding symphonies of the rainforest until night fall. Once nighttime joins us, with the aid of our flashlights we will look for animals on the shores of the lake and river. Typically, in very bright nights (full moon) the chances of finding caimans is minimal, however there are other animals that may be found such as birds and tree snakes. Once the evening activities are concluded, we will return to Tapir around 07:00 PM. During this free period before dinner, guests are welcome to take a shower, have refreshing drink at our bar or to chat with the guide about the day’s events. Dinner will be served at 07:45 PM; after dinner depending on the weather conditions we can take a quick night trek around the lodge looking for frogs and other night wanderers. Overnight spent at Tapir Lodge.
|
| • Day 3: |

Depending on the weather conditions, we may have an early start and head out on a bird watching excursion. At about 06:00 AM we will take our canoe and navigate with the rivers current, relax while you admire all the flora and fauna found along the river as we search for exotic birds, native to this region. Ranging from Blue and Yellow Macaws, Scarlet Macaws, Blue Tailed Emeralds, Hoatzins, and Amazon King Fishers, just to name a few. Boasting with a bird list of more than 500 species; makes the Cuyabeno Reserve a privileged location for birding and a delight for seasoned as well as beginner birdwatchers. Our return to the lodge should be around 07:00 AM. Upon our return, Breakfast will be served at 07:30 AM. After the breakfast service, we will meet at the pier. Today we will travel downstream. We will enjoy a 2 hour Canoe ride as we search for Morphos (Giant Blue Butterfly), Toucans, Macaws and with some luck Monkeys, combined with an excellent view of the surrounding rainforest. On our way we will pass the village of Puerto Bolivar where the inhabitants, known as the Siona have chosen to reside. Following Puerto Bolivar, we will stop at a small settlement. Here we will have the opportunity to visit and meet Alberto the local Shaman, as well as his family. These natives belong to the Cofan ethnic group. Presently Alberto spends part of his time curing and treating the local inhabitants with his vast knowledge of medicinal plants. The visit to this small settlement will also be our entry point for a new trek into the rainforest. This part of the rainforest is the habitat of the tiny Ecuadorian Poison Frog. Our trek will begin along the river bank. There we will be greeted by marvelous ancient Kapok trees. Some of these magnificent specimens are at least 800 years old; the roots of these ancient marvels can grow as big as a small room. The path that we will follow, leads us through small creeks and at the end of the trek (2 hours approximately), we will arrive at Alberto’s backyard. There we will break to enjoy a tasty box lunch and relax. Once we conclude our lunch break, Alberto will spend some time with us. This humble man carries within him more than 50 years of wisdom and knowledge regarding the rainforest and the use of medicinal plants. He will share with us some of the many experiences he has had with the rainforest, other shamans and process of healing people. For our interested guests, you can participate in a “healing” ceremony which should last about 40 minutes. There will be some free time to ask Alberto questions or simply take pictures of and with him. Handcrafts are available for purchase, all of them crafted out of materials provided by and obtained in the rainforest. We say goodbye to Alberto and his family (about 03:00 PM) and navigate back to Puerto Bolivar. There we will be greeted by a local Siona family, where we will take part in the preparation of Cassava Bread. The Yuca (Cassava) Root (Manihot Esculenta) has always been an essential food supply and perhaps the main source of carbohydrates for the indigenous communities of the rainforest. After gathering the Yuca (Cassava), it will be peeled and grinded into a paste; this “paste” is then pressed to eliminate the humidity and the starch. The remaining dried product will be fried in a pan for a few minutes; obtaining a “pancake like bread” of neutral taste which we will be able to sample. We say goodbye to the village and navigate back to Tapir arriving just before dusk. Dinner will be served at around 08:00 PM. Overnight spent at Tapir.
|
| • Day 4: |
Breakfast will be served at 07:30 AM. On this day, guests will have the option to choose their activities with the guide. Several options are available, ranging from bird watching, canoeing, fishing, or walking in the rainforest. According to the type of activity you choose, the day will be scheduled to fulfill your interest. Lunch will be served at Tapir. In the afternoon our guests can enjoy some leisure time and enjoy the last Sunset over the lake. Dinner will be served at around 08:00 PM. After dinner we will serve and enjoy a farewell Passion Fruit Cocktail, as we take a little time to introduce our hard working, attentive and diligent staff members; whom without their cooperation, assistance and courteous service Tapir Lodge could not provide our guests with the first-class service we trust you will receive from your first day with us. Confident that we will meet and exceed your expectations we hope that your stay with us is a pleasant and comfortable one, making your experience at Tapir memorable and one of a kind. Overnight spent at Tapir.
|
| • Day 5: |

Breakfast will be served at 08:00 AM. After breakfast we will coordinate and schedule your departure from Tapir. Departure time is generally between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM depending on flight times, river and road conditions as well as the guide’s decision. Our staff will attend to the luggage as they make sure it is all loaded onto the canoe. We will depart Tapir and make our way back to the bridge. Our private transportation will be waiting for us. Drive back to Lago Agrio. Arrive to airport.
This description applies to Day 4 for those traveling on the 4 days/3 nights tour.

| • Day 1 and 2: the same itinerary as 4 Days / 3 Nights - 5 Days / 4 Nights |
| • Day 3: |

After Breakfast, we will start our expedition by taking our canoe and navigating downstream for about 4 hours. A delicious box lunch will be provided. We will search for the perfect camp site on the shores of the Cuyabeno River, where we can settle our tents. Once camp is set up, the afternoon will be spent enjoying a trek through the rainforest. Due to the isolated location the chances to see diurnal mammals is greater, especially during dusk. Enjoy dinner as we overnight at our campsite, making this camping experience unique and memorable.
|
| • Day 4: |

Early in the morning, we will take the canoe and just glide downstream. This will allow guests to enjoy the sounds of the rainforest and of the animals beginning their day. We will return to camp where lunch will be served. After lunch, there will be resting period of a couple of hours. Testimonials
Because of its remoteness, there were not many tourists and you had a real sense of being in the middle of nowhere. The sunset at the flooded forest was exceptional as was swimmimg in the "black" waters of the river. We were not troubled by mosquitos at all and saw plenty of wildlife including the pink river dolphins and monkeys scampering past our window at daybreak.
