The Chimborazo Volcano (6.310m / 20,702ft), is the highest peak of Ecuador and of the World if we measure it from the core of the globe. Traversing the high plateaus around that huge volcano is an astonishing nature experience. This amazing trekking trip is directed to those who love nature and the contact with the local populations.

From the first days, the traveler is plunged in the heart of the Andean culture and his history. The Chimborazo area is populated by several indian communities that you will be able to encounter.

You will discover the most outstanding and varied landscapes of the Ecuadorian Andes, all within the Chimborazo National Park.

Itinerary

Detailed Itinerary
• Day 1: Quito - Totorillas Valley
Chimborazo Trekking Andes Ecuador AdventureWe will leave Quito in the morning, making sure you have all personal equipment necessary for the expedition. We will drive about 3 hours and on the way we will visit the village of “Colta”, the original location of the city of Riobamba that was destroyed by an earthquake on 1797.

Welcome lunch at the home-museum of the group’s host Marco Cruz. In the afternoon transfer to the mountain lodge “Estrella del Chimborazo” located at the foot of Chimborazo volcano at 3.970 m/13,024 ft on the beautiful valley of Totorillas where llamas and alpacas graze peacefully. Dinner and comfortable overnight stay at the lodge.

 
• Day 2: Quito – El Chaupi Hostelry (4.650 m / 15,256 ft)
Ecuador Trekking Chimborazo

Beginning of the trekking around Chimborazo.  From Totorillas valley we will walk about 5 hours to “Plaza Roja” at 4.860 m/15,945 ft near by the Carrel Hut in the western slope of Chimborazo. Lunch package during the walking. Dinner and overnight stay at camp.ernight stay at the lodge.
• Day 3: Quebrada Colorada

Hiking from Plaza Roja to “Quebrada Colorada” at 4.200 m / 13,780 ft in the North-Western slope of the mountain on the valley of  “Spruce Glacier”  the origin of the river “Colorado” which means “red river” by the color of its water coming from the volcanic stones and sand that the river washes along its way. Lunch package during the hiking that will take about 6 hours. Dinner and overnight stay at camp in “Quebrada Colorada”.
• Day 4: Campsite at 4.200 m / 13,780 ft
Chimborazo Trekking Hiking Trek Ecuador MountainFrom “Quebrada Colorada” we will pass to the “wet” area of the mountain influenced by the Trade Winds from the Amazonas.  In this area the landscape changes dramatically from the “puna” formation which is dry and arid to the “páramo” rich in biodiversity of plants and flowers. The hike will continue to the saddle of Abraspungu between Chimborazo and Carihuairazo at 4.600 m / 15,092 ft and then we will descend along the glacier valley on the Northeast slopes of Chimborazo where the biggest glaciers: Abraspungu and Hans Meyer are found. The hiking will take about 5 hours and we will have dinner and overnight stay at the camp settled at the eastern slope of the mountain at 4.200 m / 13,780 ft.
 
• Day 5: Humboldt Glacier

Hike to the central peaks of the Chimborazo near the “Humboldt Glacier” where the mythic “Ice Gatherers” of the Chimborazo collect the fossil ice of the mountain ascending twice a week and picking up ice blocks that are sold on the Indian markets of the area. This hiking will take about 4 hours and the campament will be located at 4.400 meters.
• Day 6: Tragoñan Trail

On this day we will continue surrounding the mountain following an old trail named “Tragoñan”  that was used by the smugglers of  sugar cane “moonlight alcohol” that transported it from the tropical lands to the Andean villages. The next campament will be located at 4.700 mts. in the upper part of the Totorillas valley. At this point we will complete our circumvallation trekking around the Chimborazo.  Dinner and overnight stay at camp. 
 
• Day 7: End of the Circumvallation trekking of the Chimborazo!

Ascension to the “Cathedral” a rock peak part of the ruins of an ancient caldera of Chimborazo. From there is possible to enjoy spectacular views of the highest snow-capped summits and volcanoes of the eastern Cordillera like Altar and Sangay. The ascension from the camp will take 3 hours to the top at 5.300 mts. and we will descend to the mountain lodge “Estrella del Chimborazo” to enjoy a nice dinner and comfortable overnight stay.
 
• Day 8: Return to Quito

Chimborazo Trekking Andes Ecuador Adventure


Drive to the city of Quito located 180 kms. north of Riobamba.  Arrive in the city by lunch time. Afternoon visit to the old city and the most important Colonial Monuments. Farewell dinner.  Overnight stay at hotel.
