Overview
Suitable for people with little or no previous experience, this is one of the very best beginners rock climbing courses available in South America. While visiting two different natural rock climbing spots in five memorable days full of action and excitement, you will learn about cliffline safety, basic movement on rock (including the correct way to use your feet, balance and weight transfer, edging and use of sideholds and layways), knots, ropehandling, belay techniques, rock features and climbing calls.
Over the 5 days you will complete several easy climbs (grades 5.7 / 5) as well as getting the opportunity to cut your teeth on the odd hard one if you’re up to it. We usually do a variety of climbs such as walls, cracks and corners ranging in height from 15 to 30 meters.
At the end of the course you will have mastered the basic skill and techniques for safe, enjoyable climbing. This will enable you to competently climb up moderately graded climbs. The 5-day rock climbing course is also ideal for indoor gym climbers who wish to make the transition from plastic to real rock.

Apart form climbing in two different rock climbing spots, in this trip you’ll have the opportunity to relax at the Hot Springs of Papallacta, traverse the Avenue of Volcanoes and visit the astonishing Chimborazo National Park and the city of Riobamba.

We leave Quito in the morning from your hotel to the wall of Sigsipamba. After a thirty minutes drive and a 5 minutes walk we’ll start the climbing course right under the volcanic rock climbing cliff. Our climbing guide will give you the first climbing instructions about top-rope and lead climbing, body movement, breathing, safety while in the mountain, climbing nuts, belaying and equipment management. We’ll finish the day relaxing at the hot springs of Papallacta before heading to our dinner and hotel in Quito.
• Day 2:
We again leave in the morning to Sigsipamba. This second day you’ll learn how to build sound top rope anchors and place and replace safety equipment while climbing. You also will learn about body balancing and energy efficiency. Bear in mind that all these will translate into greater comfort and control on every type of hiking and mountaineering terrain. We will return to Quito at dark, have dinner and rest at our hotel.
• Day 3:
Today is a climbing rest day. From Quito we’ll drive through the spectacular Avenue of Volcanoes to the City of Riobamba, passing alongside the perfect cone-shaped volcano of Cotopaxi. After lunch, we’ll drive to the entrance of Chimborazo National Park for a walk. We’ll have dinner and accommodate in a good hostelry.
• Day 4 and 5:
These two last days are fully dedicated to real practice in the impressive rock cliffs of the Acantilado, near Riobamba. You’ll have the opportunity to climb different routs with the close help and advice of our guides. The most adventurers will be able to even try to lead some pitches. We’ll return to Quito in the evening for a final dinner and to be prepared for your next trip.
